But have you ever or heard of reverse engineering your job search?

When we first start working together, many of my clients report that their job search is limited to responding to job postings online. This should be only one aspect of your job search campaign; reverse engineering your job search is an underutilized tactic you might want to consider adding to your strategy. It offers a more proactive, multifaceted approach to landing a job that is a good fit for you.

Below are steps to help you reverse engineer your job search so you can expedite your journey to finding your next great opportunity.

Seven Steps for Reverse Engineering Your Job Search

Step 1: Know Your Career Aspirations

Begin with a deep understanding of your career aspirations. Pinpoint the type of role you envision, assessing your skills, strengths, and areas for development. Are you aiming for a leadership position in a bustling corporate environment, or do you see yourself as an individual contributor in the nonprofit sector? Clarifying your career goals lays the foundation for a targeted job search strategy tailored to your unique preferences and ambitions.

Step 2: Conduct a Social Media Audit—and Adjust Accordingly

Your online presence plays a pivotal role in shaping prospective employers’ perceptions of you. Conduct a thorough audit of your social media profiles, scrutinizing each platform with a discerning eye. Are there any posts, photos, or comments that could be perceived as unprofessional or off-putting? Remember, your digital footprint reflects your personal brand, so it’s crucial to curate content that reinforces your professionalism and expertise.

Pay especially close attention to LinkedIn to ensure you’re optimizing your use of it. LinkedIn can enhance your professional visibility perhaps more than any other platform. Craft a compelling profile that highlights your skills, experiences, and achievements. Engage with industry-related content, join relevant groups, and connect with professionals in your desired field to expand your network and stay abreast of industry trends. Additionally, by providing value-added content, you can stand out to your network.

Step 3: Research and Identify Potential Organizations

Once you know your career goals and have made sure your online presence doesn’t cause red flags, identify organizations that align with your aspirations, values, and work style. Whether it’s a dynamic startup, a well-established company, an educational institution, or a mission-driven nonprofit, identifying your ideal workplace environment is essential.

Compile a list of 25–35 organizations that resonate with your values, mission, and vision for your future career. If you’re surprised by the number of organizations I recommend that you identify, you’re not alone—but for better or worse, this is often the number you need to optimize your options.

When selecting potential organizations, consider factors such as geographical location, salary expectations, and company size. Be honest with yourself about your workplace needs and preferences. If you’re unsure of this and want to gain insight, networking (see Step 4) can be helpful as can completing a DISC assessment.

Step 4: Engage with Your Target Organizations

Once you’ve identified your target organizations, immerse yourself in their world by actively engaging with their online presence. Follow their social media channels, subscribe to their newsletters, and set up Google alerts to stay informed about company news and developments. By demonstrating genuine interest and enthusiasm for their work, you position yourself as a proactive and engaged candidate.

Additionally, seek out opportunities to connect with employees of your target organizations through platforms like LinkedIn. By engaging with their content and commenting on posts, you can create goodwill that can position you to request networking conversations (see Step 5).

Step 5: Network with Individuals within Your Target Organizations

Once you’ve made connections, as mentioned in Step 4, you’ve set the stage to build rapport and forge more meaningful professional relationships through networking conversations (also called informational interviews or coffee conversations, which can be virtual or in person).

During these conversations, you can learn more about your connections’ career paths as well as company culture. Take note of common themes and insights shared by multiple individuals, which can provide clues about organizational priorities, culture, and values. You just might create an advocate who tells you about potential job opportunities and requests your materials directly to help bypass applicant tracking systems.

Step 6: Leverage Your Entire Network

In addition to networking within your target companies, cast a wide net within your existing network. Inform friends, family, former colleagues, and mentors of your job search endeavors (using discretion as necessary if you’re conducting a stealth job search) to leverage their connections and insights and uncover hidden opportunities. Also ask about their job situation and learn ways you can support them in return.

Beyond one-on-one conversations, you can also attend industry events, conferences, and meetups to expand your network and stay on top of trends and developments. Keep an open mind and be receptive to serendipitous encounters, as you never know when a chance conversation or introduction could lead to your next career opportunity. For example, I worked with a client recently who I introduced to a contact of mine; now they are coworkers.

Step 7: Maintain a Positive Mindset

It’s challenging for a connection to help someone who is always complaining and views the glass as half empty, so approach your job search with optimism. Embrace each networking opportunity as a chance to learn, connect, and expand your horizons. The journey to your next job will likely have challenges and setbacks (trust me on this!), but cultivating a positive attitude helps you overcome the obstacles.

Celebrate small victories along the way, whether it’s securing an informational interview, receiving positive feedback on your resume, or making a meaningful connection with a fellow professional. Your enthusiasm and optimism will be contagious, attracting allies who are eager to support you as you reverse engineer your job search.


Reverse engineering your job search empowers you to work proactively with confidence and purpose to find a job that is ideal for you. Does it feel laborious? Yes; of course, it does. But it is also directly in your control in a way that simply applying for jobs online without additional context of the role or organization does not.
