Hundreds of job seekers typically apply to a single job opening, and studies tell us recruiters skim a resume in about six seconds. These feel like discouraging statistics, and they might make you think you have low odds of landing an interview.
Yes, many aspects of getting a job offer are out of your control, but the quality of your resume isn’t. Many people, knowing the uphill battle of landing an interview, often think they have bad luck. Yet sometimes it really is their resume.
Resume Writing Process
In today’s market—where your resume must be constructed for both human readers and computer readers (applicant tracking systems)—it’s necessary to have a standout resume to optimize your chances of securing an interview.
My resume services are always customized to each individual’s needs, but here is an overview of my main resume packages:
- Resume Writing Package includes a custom-written resume that I write for you; I never use templates. It also involves a questionnaire, one-on-one phone or Zoom consultations, and a review session during which time I teach you how to tailor your resume. Various package levels can be customized to students, entry-level and early-career professionals, mid-career professionals, and D- and C-level professionals. You also receive access to my private Resources page, which consists of numerous tip sheets on various aspects of the job search campaign.
- Resume and Cover Letter Writing Package includes all of the above plus a custom-written cover letter. As with the resume writing package, I teach you the mechanics behind your cover letter so you can tailor it as needed in the future.
- Resume, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn Package includes all of the above plus support with your LinkedIn profile. We work together to enhance your LinkedIn profile content and visual appeal, and I coach you to get the results you want from LinkedIn.
- Comprehensive Resume and Job Search Package includes a customized resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile, job search strategy coaching, and interview coaching. This package sets you up for success by empowering you to deliver a clear and confident message across all components of your job search campaign.
The resume writing process I’ve designed is thorough and often takes about three to four weeks from start to finish. Sometimes, we can work on a faster timeline, and sometimes life gets busy for my clients and the process takes longer. I do my best to meet you where you’re at, and we will work together to complete your resume in a timely manner.
Resume Writing for Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Beyond
I relocated to North Carolina from Ohio to start my graduate studies at Duke University in Durham, where I lived for nearly 10 years. Since 2015, I’ve resided in Apex, North Carolina. As a result of being rooted in the Research Triangle and Morrisville area for more than 15 years, I’ve come to know and love this area. Many of my clients are local, but I also serve clients throughout North Carolina including in Charlotte and Wilmington.
Over the years, I’ve developed hubs outside of North Carolina where many of my clients are located. These areas include Northern Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, Georgia (Atlanta), Florida (specifically Miami and Tampa), Texas (Houston, Austin, and Dallas), California (all along the coast but especially the San Francisco area), and Colorado (Denver). When working across time zones, we coordinate our schedules so that we can usually keep our meetings within normal business hours.
Internationally, I primarily work with clients in Canada, the UK, and Europe (Spain, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, and Italy). It’s been helpful that I have taught and consulted for programs that have predominantly international students from Europe.
Where My Clients Work and Send Their Resumes
My clients work for or have gotten hired at a wide range of small to mid-size companies and non-profits, as well as multinational corporations such as Wells Fargo, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Google, IBM, Microsoft, and NBC.
The Raleigh-Durham area is one of the country’s hubs for life sciences, so it’s unsurprising that I work with many life science professionals. I co-facilitated a life science networking group for several years, and I routinely work with professionals in this field. Career Path Writing Solutions is also a corporate sponsor of Women in Bio-RTP.
Many of my clients have also successfully transitioned across industries. Examples of these transitions include faculty or graduate students leaving academia for industry, military members transitioning into civilian roles, “employees” transitioning to business ownership, business owners transitioning to traditional “employee” roles, and specialists branching out to a new field (e.g., IT professional switching from banking to manufacturing).
CV Editing and Coaching for Academics
Because of my background in higher education, I also work with faculty and higher education leaders on their CVs. My clients have used their CVs for applications to become directors of large programs, deans, and presidents of colleges and universities. When working on CVs for university leadership positions, partnering with my client is crucial. We use a combination of phone/Zoom calls, information clients provided through a questionnaire, and Track Changes in MS Word.
My philosophy is to provide you not just with a great resume for right now, but also with an understanding of how you can pivot and tailor the resume on your own later. To that end, I teach you these strategies and provide your final resume in an editable format you can update yourself.
Contact me if you’d like to schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss your needs. I look forward to hearing from you!
